For the past few days, my 3 year old son has had a dry, hacking cough. It is especially irritating at night when he is trying to fall asleep. He had a little bit of a cold last week and then it just got progressively worse. I try really hard to let any kind of cold, cough, flu run its course with my family because I know our bodies are made to fight off infection and heal on their own. But, listening to my poor baby cough and cough and cough at night has been hard for me to handle.
Here are some homeopathic supplements and other tricks of the trade we use to help with colds and coughs:
1. Hyland’s Bronchial Cough
These tablets work like a charm. The kids and I use them when we get even a little bit of a cough. They help to stop the cough in it’s tracks. I have asthma so these seem to really help me with that as well.
2. Hyland’s #4 – Ferrum Phos. 6x for Fevers, Inflammation, Colds
3. Hyland’s #5 – Kali Mur. 30x for Colds, Sore Throat, Runny Nose, Burns
(I get these products at Vitacost.com as they are about 50% cheaper than at my local health food store).
4. A hot steam shower helps to loosen up those dry coughs. Run the shower on hot water and let the bathroom get really steamy. We then go in and sit with our son for 5 to 10 minutes, however long we can take the heat.
5. Good old fashioned honey and lemon works really, really well to cut those dry, hacking coughs. We use Stakich raw honey since it is a locally made honey. Raw honey has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties. Buying a locally grown honey is preferred becaue it contains small amounts of the specific pollens an individual may be allergic to. Honey helps to sooth the throat as well since a dry, hacking cough is uncomfortable and can make your throat feel sore. *** Due to the risk of botulism, honey should not be given to infants under one year of age.

The lemon adds phytochemical (compounds produced by plants) properties to the tincture. I have been putting 1 to 2 teaspoons of raw honey into boiling water to let it melt. I then add 1 to 2 squirts of lemon from the wedge and let this cool. I have been having my son drink this throughout the day and right before bed for the past two days (he uses one of those medicine droppers and takes a teaspoon each time). This has seemed to help his cough a lot. I was actually pretty amazed at how quickly we saw results. I feel so much better not giving my kids over the counter meds that contain a lot of chemicals and can cause side effects. This makes my mommy heart very happy!
