Green Smoothies (part 1 of 2)

Awhile ago I kept hearing and seeing information about green smoothies.  It seemed like everywhere I went, I saw or heard something about them.  So, I did a search on Google for “green smoothies”.  I did not want to be left out of the green smoothie craze!

The second website that came up,, was the one I chose to look at first.  And boy am I glad I did!  I devoured the information that Robyn Openshaw has on both her website and her blog.  I started implementing some of the steps she suggests right away and doing some of the healthy tips she recommends.

I first started by making a green smoothie.  I found a very easy, quick recipe to try.  I made it in the blender I had at that time.  A 15 year old Kitchenaid blender that had worked well for me for a very long time.  Well, let me tell you, my smoothie did not turn out very palatable whatsoever.  It was not blended well since a Kitchenaid does not have the ability to blend a lot of fruits and vegetables into a great smoothie consistency.  It had a lot of pulp in it that I could taste and feel as I was drinking the smoothie.  I offered my kids some and they balked at it and after the first sip, would not drink anymore.

What was all the hype about?  I just didn’t understand why there was so much information out there about green smoothies!  Were people just choking these things down because they knew of the health benefits?  I really wasn’t sure if I could do that everyday!  I wanted to be healthy and to get as much nutrition from a smoothie as possible but felt like I was missing something.

Well, I was!  It is called a commercial blender!  This is what a restaurant uses to make smoothies or shakes.   The Vitamix (which I now have) is a top of the line blender that I would definitely not hesitate to recommend for green smoothies.  I found out about this type of blender from my aunt.  She makes green smoothies all the time and has a Vitamix blender to do so.

I asked her questions about her blender and what she thought of it.  She loves it.  I decided to order one for myself and was so excited to get my Vitamix blender and get started with green smoothies!  I could not wait to get it and watched for the UPS truck every day!  Or maybe it was the FedEx truck, I can’t remember!  A brown or white truck is what I had my eye on!  LOL!

When my blender finally arrived, I was so excited!  I opened it up and took all the pieces out along with the free cookbook that comes with it.  I washed all the parts and made a green smoothie right away.  And, voila!  I had a real green smoothie!  Smooth, creamy, delicious!
